Concert – and opera singer, music scientist and internationally active singing professor. After examinations from The Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and Bachelor in Music, Arts and Sciences at the Stockholm University Sonja Stenhammar specialized herself in singing with singing professors in Salzburg, Amsterdam , Wiesbaden and Wien.
Sonja Stenhammar made very fast an important international career starting in Spain, where she gave many concerts and sang as soloist with Orquestra Nacional d´Espana and RTV Orquesta in Madrid and the symphony orquestras in Barcelona, Bilbao and Sevilla.
In Swizerland she has given many concerts and appeared as soloist with several of the most important orchestras. In Polen she sang the solo parts of oratorios as Requiem by Mozart and Frank Martin and Haydn : Die Jahreszeiten.
In South Amerika she has been eight times to give concerts, as soloist with orchestra and giving Master Classes: in Rio de Janeiro, San Salvador, Brasilia, Recife, Buenos Aires, Rosario and Montevideo.
In Italy she gave annually Lieder-Abende and was soloist at the festivals in Sorrento, San Remo and Ravello. With the Arturo Toscanini Symphony Orchestra she sang the big scène of Vitellia from Titus by Mozart seven times in Emilia Romagna and the fourth Symphony by Mahler. In Torino she was soprano soloist in Carmina Burana by Orff. Sonja Stenhammar has also given concerts in Bulgaria, France, Greece, Brazil, Argentina, USA and Austria. At an important Mozart Jubilee she sang the solo part of Mozart Requiem in the Cathedral of Salzburg.
In Spain she gave numerous concerts and was soloist with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Stockholm, The Baroque Ensemble of Drottningholm and appeared in Radio and Television Programs.
The large repertory of Sonja Stenhammar made her collaborate in Lieder- Abende and as soloist in Oratorio- Opera and Chamber music.
Contemporary music has every year been on her programmes and she made the first performance of several works written for her voice.
Sonja Stenhammar has made records among others at EMI, Erato, EMS (Brussels) and Grammont (Switzerland).
Sonja Stenhammar has been very devoted to teaching vocal techniques and interpretation. She has given many master classes in America, Italy and Switzerland. During six years she directed an opera school in Italy, organized by Amici della Musica, with support by the cultural ministry in Rom and the Symphonic Orchestra in Palermo. She continues to teach.
Sonja Stenhammar is often member of juries at important international singing competitions as for example ARD in Munich, The Wagner competition in New York, Voce Verdiani in Busseto when the world famous tenor Carlo Bergonzi was president, Tjajkovsky Competition in Moscou, Viña del Mar Competition in Chile, Elly Ameling Competition in Haag, Maria Callas Competition in Athens, the Opera Competitions in Paris, Spoleto and Bilbao, The José Carreras Competition in Pamplone among others.
Sonja Stenhammar has during her career as singer and teacher had great advantage of her knowledge in languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Swedish.
